Consolidated B-24 Liberator

The 376th HBG began operations with 23 Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers.  They were joined by 10 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses in July.  After the B-17s withdrew for repairs in late 1942, the 376th HBG continued to operate as a B-24 Group.

The Group was organized into 4 bomb squadrons - the 512th, 513th, 514th, and 515th.  To keep their B-24 Liberators organized while in combat formation, each squadron was assigned a unique sequence of numbers.  The 512th used numbers between 20 and 39; 513th, 40-59; 514th, 60-79; 515th, 80-99.  Known in some circles as the Recall Code (RCL), each plane had its assigned number painted prominently on its nose and vertical tail.

There was one exception to the RCL Sequence described above.  When the Army Air Corps groups began operating radar equipped ships, the 376th HBG used the last three digits of the airplanes serial or tail number.  So, for example, 42-51142 was such a radar equipped pane and was known by the RCL "142."  Before she was modified into a radar airplane, she bore the RCL "78."

The 376th HBG operated several B-24s of notable fame.  The first is the Strawberry Bitch.  She is currently on display at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.  She flew over 50 missions with the 512th Squadron from September 1943 through June 1944.

Another "infamous" B-24 was the Lady Be Good.  She failed to return from her very first mission on April 4, 1943.  She and her crew of 10 were reported as MIA as her fate was unknown.  Sixteen years later, a British oil exploration crew found her lying in the middle of the Libyan desert.

A third B-24 of some renown was the Liberandos Boomerang; which set a new Mediterranean Theater record for heavy bombardment aircraft, having participated in 132 missions all of which were actual sorties. It had also established a record for consecutive missions, having flown 97 without once having been turned back because of mechanical failure. Only one turn-back marred its otherwise perfect flying record, this being caused by an oxygen leak on the 35th mission

By the end of the war, nearly 450 B-24s had flown missions with the 376th HBG.
