Sortie #7 - Mission #13
Primary - Leipheim. Airdroma - but hit Hall M.Y. Alternate.
I flew Radar Oper. again in 87, Position 6. We were to hit the Jet Propelled Air Drome at Leipheim - but due to an undercase we bombed Hall. We dropped the bombs at 13:05. Loaded with 16-250#RDX We were briefed to expect about 30 S/E. Fighters and 20 jets. Were we worried! We had 50 P51s escort they said - though we only saw about 15. On the way back we got a lot of flak from Venice - damn near got us - as we were at 14000 ft. The T. G . said “Let s get out of here Merle its coming upon our tail.” Things were hot as hell for a couple minutes. Even tho we’d crossed the shore line they kept firing. Bombing alt. was 26000. We took off at 0810 - Landed at 1620 - Total 8:10 hrs. The longest yet. We fly again tomorrow. No fighters seen.
The website 376bg.org is NOT our site nor is it our endowment fund.
At the 2017 reunion, the board approved the donation of our archives to the Briscoe Center for American History, located on the University of Texas - Austin campus.
Also, the board approved a $5,000 donation to add to Ed Clendenin's $20,000 donation in the memory of his father. Together, these funds begin an endowment for the preservation of the 376 archives.
