George B. "Peck" Whitlock was an engineer in the 513 squadron. He was part of the James Hill crew.
He wrote the following about one of his pre-flight experiences:
Engineer Peck Whitlock of the 513th was feeling no pain during an evening of celebrating the news that his pilot, Jim Hill, had become a new father.
"We weren't scheduled to fly the next day," Peck recalled, "but about midnight, some guy came around, saw what condition I was in, and told me I'd better get to bed, that I was flying the next day.
"'The hell you say,' I told him. 'Look on the board then,' he said. Sure enough, there was my name with a strange crew. Some engineer had gotten sick, and they stuck me in his place.
"Well, you can imagine the shape I was in the next morning, I was sick when I got up, sicker at briefing, and the closer we got to the target, the sicker I got.
"When we hit the IP, the pilot told me to get my flak helmet and jacket on. I had just tried and failed to upchuck in the bomb bay, and my face had to be green. I just told that pilot: 'Damn it, I hope they hit this thing and blow us all to kingdom come. It'll put me out of my misery.' He looked at me and I know he thought I was crazy."
The website 376bg.org is NOT our site nor is it our endowment fund.
At the 2017 reunion, the board approved the donation of our archives to the Briscoe Center for American History, located on the University of Texas - Austin campus.
Also, the board approved a $5,000 donation to add to Ed Clendenin's $20,000 donation in the memory of his father. Together, these funds begin an endowment for the preservation of the 376 archives.
